Caret renders onto the PALS brain which is currently en vogue. It's certainly not the easiest software to learn how to use. Documentation is fairly extensive and leads the new user through a fairly extensive tutorial, though what all the steps are doing isn't amazingly clear. It's tough to render more than one map onto a surface without having to limit yourself to one colour per map (as opposed to a more informative colour scheme which you can only use when rendering only one map).
Other Comments/Similar Tools:
Mricro and its variants may be easier to use off the bat if you can bear rendering onto non-PALS brain.
